DANIEL SHANKEN: PHOTOGRAPHS OF ISRAEL

DESCRIPTION:  Daniel Shanken, an Abington, Pennsylvania native, was a photojournalist based in Jerusalem for five years.  While largely political and religious in subject, his photography is subtle in its depiction of the human condition.

This exhibition brought together the work of one photojournalist on professional assignment.  Many of the images displayed were profound, others are profoundly disturbing.  They constituted a chronicle of a controversy and, as such, were controversial themselves.  Hopefully, we have learned something about them, and about life in Israel today through the lens of Daniel Shanken’s cameras.  Perhaps, we have also learned something about ourselves.
