Monday, May 22 DARK DAYS IN POST-WAR HOLLYWOOD  w/ SHARON HARRIS ZLOTNICK

The House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), formed in the 1930s, but became a national force in the late 1940s. It tested the meaning and boundaries of American democracy when the Hollywood community became its favorite target.
As careers and loyalties were affected into the 1950s, many actors, actresses, directors and writers took different approaches that ultimately impacted their careers. This lecture will describe that contentious period in 20th century America and includes two film clips that define the era when friends turned on friends and famous stars became outcasts.

Sharon Harris-Zlotnick is an Atlantic County, New Jersey professional journalist, adult education instructor, former public relations executive and English teacher.

Since 1993, Sharon has written for multiple American and international business magazines, concentrating on the casino and arcade industries. As a freelance writer, she has written thousands of consumer features/columns for dozens of weekly and monthly publications and private companies.

Sharon launched her monthly “Hooray for Hollywood” series for Stockton University’s Friends of Encore Learning at Stockton (FELS)-www.felstockton.com-adult enrichment program in October 2016. The FELS roster, open to everyone, includes a diverse range of topics for all interests every season. The coursework has so far covered Hollywood’s history, from its earliest days in the 1890s through the late 1940s.

A native of Cheltenham Township, she lived in suburban Philadelphia for most of her life. Sharon relocated to the Jersey Shore in 2000 to marry now-retired Atlantic County attorney Norman Zlotnick.

Sharon lectures on classic Hollywood topics throughout South Florida communities during the winter months.
