CARVED LEGACIES: Artists Shaping a Jewish Visual World

Was the first Jewish sculpture the Tablets of the Law, the Tabernacle in the wilderness or the Golden Calf?

This is the first exhibition to focus on our own sculpture collection. Much of the collection came to us as gifts and, obviously, Moses is a very popular subject among collectors of Jewish Art. These varied objects extend the breadth of the TJM collection that now numbers well over 6,000 items, as they also extend the consideration of sculpture as a Jewish traditional art.

The Old Becomes New – From Generation to Generation

This installation displays the talent and viewpoint of TJM volunteer, fashion professional, designer and teacher, Jan Marshall. Jan selected photographs from the collections of TJM and from the KI Archives. She then applied her critical eye and skills with Adobe Photoshop to create a new way of seeing these images through a fashion oriented lens.

No Matter How Bad Things Get, You’ve Got to Go on Living, Even if it Kills You.

For almost ten years TJM volunteer, Maxine Schwartz has been in charge of creating a paper record for each new object in the museum’s permanent collection. When asked if she would like to curate a showcase exhibition of collection objects she said yes, immediately knowing what she wanted to be her focus: objects that convey a Jewish Sense of Humor. Maxine is also an artist member of the TJM Artists’ Collaborative and, as such, she brings an aesthetic eye to this unique assessment of the TJM permanent collection.

This display showcases Judaica that was gifted to this synagogue in honor or memory of a loved one. For our synagogue community, these sacred objects take on added meaning. They connect us not only to our heritage and our Torah, but to the KI family of past, present and future. We are thus making L’Dor V’Dor – From Generation to Generation real.
