CARVED LEGACIES: Artists Shaping a Jewish Visual World

The TJM Sculpture Collection is small but varied, it is biblical, personal, historical, and fun. It reflects Jewish culture, history, folk art, religious practice and themes connected with Israel. There are sculptures created by well-known artists such as Phillip Ratner and folk sculptures by unknown artisans. There are dolls from Israel, made by hand for the tourist trade in the years after Israel was created and, many years later, intimate ceramic sculptures created by Ethiopian immigrants to Israel for a later tourist trade. An American doll reflects upon stories of diaspora – emigration and immigration.

Shown by TJM for the first time in Carved Legacies, and a special feature in this display are miniature sculptural environments or constructions, based upon the physical format of books, by the late Gad Almaliah (1939 – 2007.) They are from a gift of fourteen such works given to this museum by the artist’s widow. We are especially proud to have been chosen as the keeper of Gad Almaliah’s unique and important creative legacy.
