President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and eventually move the US embassy there is not a surprise. He has been saying he would do that since starting his campaign and as the “iconoclast in chief,” was likely to break with American foreign policy tradition and go it alone. What is surprising is the seeming lack of context. No one else was asked to do anything in return for this diplomatic move. For sure, it was an outright gift (for now) to Netanyahu and a black eye for Abbas. By contrast, the consequences are profound.
