On behalf of Rabbi David and myself, I want to share news about our Sacred Music Program that is both significant and bittersweet. Andrew Senn and Hazzan David Tilman, will be leaving their roles in the coming months for family and professional reasons. We will miss them and what they brought to our community and Sacred Music program deeply. We will continue our commitment to uphold the spirit and quality of Jewish music they have nurtured so beautifully over the years.
Andrew Senn, our talented organist for the past 13 years, has announced that his final Shabbat service will be on Friday, November 22nd. This decision, reached after much thought and reflection, comes as Andrew seeks to balance his demanding new role as Director of Music at the Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr and devote more time to his family, particularly his young twins. Andrew’s presence, passion, and artistry have been integral to KI, enriching our worship and bringing joy to our congregation. I am grateful for the opportunity to have helped select Andrew, whose talent and dedication surpassed all expectations. His warm personality, sense of humor and talent made working together so fun and wonderful. I will deeply miss his friendship and support. Please join us on Friday, November 22nd at 7pm as we say: “lihitraot”- see you soon!
Hazzan David Tilman, who has directed Shir KI for 14 remarkable years, will retire from his position in May 2025. Beyond his musical leadership, David’s pastoral care and dedication to reaching out to congregants have been invaluable. He has supported and inspired so many of us with his Jewish knowledge, wisdom, and through his compassion. His time with us has been filled with musical triumphs, from musical Shabbat services to grand performances at venues like Verizon Hall, collaborating with renowned artists and bringing vibrant Jewish music to life. I am deeply honored to have played a part in bring Hazzan David Tilman to our community. He is not just a colleague but a true friend. His vision, leadership, and the joy he brings will be dearly missed. David and his wife, Ellen, plan to move closer to family in New Jersey, entering a new chapter surrounded by his son, Howard, daughter-in-law Naomi, and his adorable grandchildren- Micah and Sophie.
Change is difficult. Andrew and David have been friends and partners of mine who have turned dreams into reality and lifted our community in countless ways. Though this marks the end of a chapter, it is also the beginning of a new one for KI. We will seek support, strive to maintain the vitality of our music program, and work together to ensure that our musical tradition remains a source of connection and inspiration. Let me know if you’d like to help in this process.
Please join me in expressing deep gratitude to both Andrew and David for their years of dedication, their remarkable talent, and the legacy they leave behind. Their music, friendship, and love has been a gift to us all.
