See to it that you do not spoil and destroy my world; for if you do, there will be no one else to repair it.

KI is earning our Energy Shield in 5779…We need your help!

KI is earning our Energy Shield through a collaboration with RAC and Greenfaith. Judaism commands us to be keepers of the earth (shomrei adamah) and to heal the world (tikkun olam). To preserve the earth for our children and to halt global climate change, we must learn to live sustainably.

The Energy Shield is a program to guide us to make meaningful, sustainable changes both in our synagogue and our homes. To earn our Energy Shield, we need KI families to make the Energy Shield Pledge. The pledge means that you will switch to using renewable energy and do a home energy audit. If every KI family does this, it is like planting 80,000 trees. See the reverse side for details.

We invite you to learn more about what KI is doing and can do to protect the earth at Sustainability Shabbat at 8:00 p.m. on October 5, 2018.

Look for Green Tips to help you live more sustainably in the KI newsletter throughout the year and for special environmental education programs and volunteer opportunities.

How to Make the Energy Shield Pledge

1) Choose to Pledge: Send an e-mail to [email protected] indicating your willingness to pledge to live more sustainably. Pledge to switch to using renewable electricity and conduct a home energy audit and work to reduce the amount of energy used in your home.

2) Switch to Renewable Energy: The easiest way is to select a 100% renewable energy supplier through PECO. Your service won’t change. PECO will still bill you. PECO will purchase the amount of electricity you use each month from a renewable supplier (eg, wind or solar). You will need your PECO account number to switch.

AEP’s 100% Renewable Energy option is the most affordable and will cost the average family <$10 extra each month (1-855-300-7192).  For a full list of renewable suppliers go to www.papowerswitch.com, then “Shop for Energy”. You can select Renewable Energy, PA Wind or2 PA Renewable under “Special Options” at the bottom left of the screen. Experts suggest a fixed rate contract with no fees. Put a reminder on your calendar at the end of your contract to go back to the website to shop again.

If you want to learn more about buying solar panels for your home visit Learn more about going solar at https://www.thesolarfoundation.org.

3) Conduct a Home Energy Audit: Most families can reduce their home energy use by ~30% (~$600/year). Start with a $25 PECO home energy audit. Schedule this at www.peco.com (under “Ways to Save”) or call 1-888-5-PECO-SAVE. Look for the monthly energy usage report in your bill to see how much you have saved. Many home energy improvements are DIY. For those that aren’t, a PECO audit will provide you information on energy specialists in your area.

4) Choose to Pledge: Fill out the enclosed pledge card. Bring it to KI (look for a box outside the door to the sanctuary) or mail it.
